App for Inca Trail and other hikes to Machu Picchu

A New App Will Help You Hike to Machu Picchu

A new app providing maps, photos, and information about archeological sites and local flora and fauna promises to put Cusco "in the palm of your hand". It's free for use on iOS and Android, doesn't require an internet connection once downloaded, and covers the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu as well as the alternative Salkantay and Choquequirao routes.

Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru

The dream of many visitors to Peru is to hike the fabled Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, a tough but scenic hike that carries a lot of traveler cred. For many, to arrive at the Sun Gate by foot and watch as first light hits the citadel is to see Machu Picchu as it was meant to be seen. Now, the challenge just got a little more satisfying thanks to a new app by photographer Walter West that provides hikers with all the information they need to know.

It's not just for the Inca Trail, either. The app also includes the most popular alternative routes to Machu Picchu, such as the 5-day Salkantay and the 8-day Choquequirao treks.

If you download the Hi-Tec Camino Inca app before embarking on your trip, you'll be able to guide yourself along the way by accessing virtual maps, information about archeological sites and local bird and wildlife, and photos on your smart phone or tablet. An internet connection isn't necessary to make use of these features. The app is available free of charge for iOS and Android.

The tagline, "Now, Cusco in the palm of your hand" delivers on the promise somewhat by adding to the knowledge and enjoyment of those undertaking some of the city's major hikes to Machu Picchu. Hopefully, someone will follow suit with a Cusco app that will really will put the entire city, the stunning former imperial capital of the Incas, in the palms of our hands.
