Tips:

Humantay Lake has consolidated itself in recent years as one of the favorite places for travelers visiting Cusco. Before the Humantay Lake Full Day Tour became so popular, this wonderful natural spot was only visited by adventurers on the 4 or 5-day Salkantay trek. Today, thanks to current accessibility, it is possible to marvel at this turquoise water mirror in a single-day trip.

Humantay and Salkantay Snow-Capped Mountains Altitude

  • The imposing Humantay Mountain is located at an altitude of 5,473 masl (17,956 feet). This ice colossus feeds the lagoon through the natural melting of its glaciers.
  • For its part, the sacred Salkantay Mountain rises majestically at an altitude of 6,271 masl (20,574 feet), being one of the most important Apus (sacred mountains) in Andean cosmovision.

Hike Difficulty and Acclimatization

According to travelers' experiences, the trek to the Humantay snow-capped mountain is of a moderate difficulty level due to the steep slope of the trail. For this reason, prior acclimatization is essential to prevent altitude sickness. Before taking the Humantay Lake tour, we strictly recommend staying at least a couple of days in the imperial city of Cusco.

Best Time to Visit the Lake

  • Dry Season (April to September): Considered the best time and high season. It features sunny days, total absence of rain, clear skies, and perfect panoramic views for photography.
  • Rainy Season (October to March): Coincides with the low season. Days are rainier, the sky is usually cloudy, and the weather is changeable, but in return, you will enjoy completely green and lively Andean landscapes.
