Detailed Itinerary: Day by Day

DAY 1: Cusco – Paucartambo – Eco Lodge

We will depart from Cusco towards Paucartambo. Along the route, we will be able to see the famous Chullpas de Ninamarca, belonging to the pre-Inca culture.

We will cross the high mountains until we reach the town of Paucartambo, famous for its patron saint festival of the Virgin of Carmen, where we will have lunch. We will take a short walk through the town, visit its famous church, and then continue our journey to Tres Cruces.

Afterwards, we will descend to the cloud forest area, where we can observe Peru’s national bird, the Andean Cock-of-the-rock. We may also see playful monkeys and a wide variety of medicinal plants and flowers. We will arrive at the eco-lodge, settle in, and have dinner.

DAY 2: Discovering the Andean Cock-of-the-rock, herons, and cormorants

We will wake up very early to enjoy the courtship dance of the Andean Cock-of-the-rock, a bird with striking orange-red plumage. We will observe this spectacular species from a birdwatching platform. After breakfast, we will head to the town of Pilcopata. Our destination is the Atalaya port (700 m.a.s.l.), where a motorized boat will be waiting for us.

We will travel downstream along the river, and along the way we will be able to see a great variety of birds such as herons, vultures, cormorants, and more. We will arrive at a private reserve, where we will spend the next two nights.

DAY 3: Discovering the flora – Parrot Clay Lick – Lake Machuwasi

Very early in the morning, we will board the boat that will take us to the parrot clay lick, where several parakeets and macaws gather to feed on a clay wall that contains minerals and salts essential for their diet. After this activity, we will return to the lodge to enjoy a good breakfast.

After breakfast, we will travel by motorboat to Lake Machuwasi on the Upper Madre de Dios River, where we will observe a great diversity of birds. Then, we will take a 30-minute walk along a trail in the middle of the jungle to observe and learn about the flora, such as sensitive plants, heliconias, etc.

In the afternoon, we will go on a hike to see the Ceiba tree, one of the oldest and largest trees in the area. Then we will return to the lodge.

DAY 4: Lodge – Atalaya Port – Cusco

After breakfast, we will take the boat back to Atalaya Port, where our transport will be waiting. From there, we will continue our return journey to the city of Cusco. Along the way, we may stop at a viewpoint where we can observe a variety of hummingbirds, as well as monkeys, and with some luck, a sloth. We will have lunch en route before arriving in Cusco.
