Detailed Itinerary: Day by Day
Day 1:
Cusco - Maras Salt Ponds - Moray - Cusco
At 9:00 a.m. we will pick up our clients from their hotel in Cusco and we will go to the town of Maras for the meeting with our Horseman and the Horses. There will be a brief talk before we mount our horses and begin our journey.
First we will pass by the salt mines of Maras, which are on the slopes of Mount Qaqawiñay, where thousands of small carved stone pools are filled with a flow of salt water diverted from the interior of Qaqawiñay as they have done since the the time of the Incas. This artisan process of salt extraction creates a visually striking site of varied tones and textures, due to the sunlight bouncing different levels of salt. The site is administered jointly by the town of Maras.
During our trip along the dirt road of the valley, we will enjoy breathtaking landscapes surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera de los Andes. Passing through small towns and fields of crops that serve as subsistence for the native inhabitants. From there we will go to the Archaeological Complex of Moray (3200 masl), this was an agricultural laboratory in which we experimented with seeds and the development of crops. After four years and US$1.5 million, the restoration of the Church of San Pedro in the remote Andean village of Andahuaylillas, a priceless colonial art treasure showcasing the "Andean Baroque", has been completed.
