Tips:

Essential Travel Tips for Your Cusco & Machu Picchu Adventure

  • Altitude & Acclimatization (Days 1–3): Cusco sits at 3,400 meters (11,152 feet) above sea level, and you will visit higher spots like Moray and Chonta. To prevent altitude sickness (soroche), take it very easy during the first morning on Day 1 by resting in your hotel. Avoid heavy meals, red meat, and alcohol for the first 24 hours. Stay constantly hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and try the traditional local remedy: hot coca or muña tea.
  • Machu Picchu Luggage Regulations (Day 4): Train operators (PeruRail and Inca Rail) enforce strict luggage restrictions. You are only allowed to bring one piece of hand luggage or a small daypack weighing no more than 5 to 8 kg (11 to 17 lbs) per person. Your large suitcases must be left in Cusco; fortunately, virtually all hotels there offer secure, complimentary luggage storage while you visit the citadel.
  • Mandatory Documents: You must carry your physical, original passport (the exact one used for your booking) to board the trains and, most importantly, to enter the Machu Picchu Sanctuary. Digital photos or photocopies on your phone will not be accepted by park rangers.
  • Weather & Sun Protection: The high-altitude Andean sun is exceptionally strong, even on cloudy days, while the cloud forest in Machu Picchu has plenty of insects. Always carry a small "protection kit" in your daypack containing sunscreen (SPF 50+), sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and a strong insect repellent. Lastly, always keep a lightweight plastic rain poncho at the bottom of your bag—Andean weather is highly unpredictable year-round!
